Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research assistant to investigate the therapeutic potential of estrogen in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Clinical studies have found significant impairments in brain function in women following the menopause and with ageing. Women are also twice as likely as men to develop brain diseases like AD and dementia. Reductions in the levels of the hormone estrogen have been linked to these deficits and recent studies indicate that estrogen markedly influences the processes that allow the brain to learn and remember information. Thus estrogen-based therapies may help to alleviate age-related cognitive decline and AD in women. However our knowledge of how estrogen influences brain function is limited. Here we aim to examine the effects of different estrogen-sensitive receptors Ｏn the cellular events that underlie learning and memory. The effectiveness of estrogen receptors in alleviating the detrimental brain changes that occur in AD will also be explored. This study may ultimately identify novel therapeutic targets for the more effective clinical management of cognitive deficits and AD.

The project is multidisciplinary and will involve a combination of electrophysiology, state-of-the-art confocal microscopy, biochemistry and molecular biological approaches. Applicants with experience of electrophysiological techniques and/or confocal microscopy are particularly encouraged to apply, but other suitably qualified applicants will be considered.
