Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Solid Mechanics and Materials Engineering

Salary: Grade 7 £29,541 – £36,298 p.a.

We are seeking a full-time postdoctoral research assistant to join the group of Dr. Antoine Jerusalem within the Solid Mechanics and Materials Engineering Group at the Department of Engineering Science (central Oxford). The post is funded by an ERC Starting Grant and is fixed-term for four years from 1st April 2014.

The overall objective of the project is the development of a neuron model constituted of length-scale dedicated numerical techniques, adequately bridged together by use of multiscale approaches. You will be in charge of coordinating the experimental needs of the project with the experimental support of the Oxford Mechanobiology Group and Tissue Engineering Group at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering. Other collaborations are also envisioned. You will be in charge of channeling the biological and medical knowledge of the studied cells for modeling inputs, as well as overseeing the experimental efforts required by the Modeling pole of the project. You will be responsible for preparing research reports, undertaking experiments and presenting work.

You should possess a PhD/DPhil (or have equivalent experience) in a relevant area, have experience in experimental work with neurons, cell culture, experimental mechanical testing and electrophysiology and/or ion imaging techniques. You must also have the ability to work independently and to interact effectively with other research staff and senior academics as well as excellent communication skills.
